which you can take smart, feel-good actions that will
save you money while helping the environment?. The good
news is that there are many ways you and your family can
help preserve energy and improve the environment for all
of us. Routine maintenance and minor changes in how you
use your appliances can reduce utility bills and
contribute to a cleaner environment.
SAVE ENERGY AT HOME
•
Switch to the energy efficient Compact Fluorescent
Lights that use up to 75% less
energy than incandescent bulbs and last up to 10 times
longer than incandescent bulbs
.A 13-watt CFL bulb is equivalent to a
60-watt incandescent bulb and is
designed to last 10,000 hours with a
light output of 100 lumens
•
When buying an air-conditioner, check its Energy
Efficiency Ratio (EER)*. A minimum EER of 7.5
Btu/h/w is recommended; the
higher the number, the better it is. Do not obstruct
input or output air vents. Keep
windows and doors shut when the air-conditioner is
running, and draw curtains or
blinds to keep direct sunlight
out.
•
When buying refrigerators, choose a high
energy-efficiency refrigerator. Single door models are
the most efficient; then stacked
double doors, then parallel double doors. Select the
size best suited to your
family's needs. Do not put hot/warm food into your
fridge - let it cool to room temperature first
and try not to open and close
the fridge too often
•
In order to save water make sure there are no leaks in
your toilet flushing system. If you have a
dripping tap, please get it
fixed – it can waste up to 70 liters of water every 24
hours.
• With any type of home
entertainment - radio, TV, stereo, computer – turn it
on only when you're about to use it,
and don't leave it running once you have finished with
it. It may be hard to believe,
but over 50 percent of the
electricity used by home electronic
equipment is consumed even when
the products
are turned off. That's because they're not really "off"
- they're on standby mode.
•
While cooking use a pressure cooker as it saves up to
2/3 cooking time, saves energy,
and preserves the goodness
in your food.
•
In Winters lower the thermostat at night and when you're
away (55°F lowest setting) which will
save 1% for every 1°F
temperature decrease for an eight-hour setback
•
Educate others : Let friends and family know about these
practical, energy-saving steps. Do these
few recommendations, and you'll
help make a difference for the environment and save
money, too.
These
notes have been prepared to show how you can save energy
in every aspect of running your own household. We do not
suggest, that you reduce your standard of living in any
way , but simply, with a little bit of thought, you can
enjoy all the amenities and lifestyle that you do now,
yet also be making your own, positive contribution
towards the environment. While the amounts of energy
saved per household are small... added up they
can be very large.
